Pranit More Issues Public Apology Amid Obscenity Controversy; Maharashtra Cyber FIR Sparks Wider Debate on Limits of Free Expression

In a video shared on Instagram on Saturday, More acknowledged the criticism directed at him and admitted that he had made a serious mistake during an audience interaction that triggered widespread backlash. He stated that he had wanted to address the issue earlier, but his Instagram account had been suspended.

Explaining the circumstances behind the controversy, More said that during a crowd interaction, an individual made several derogatory remarks. According to him, the audience's reaction and laughter caused him to lose judgment in the moment. He admitted that he should have intervened and stopped the comments but failed to do so.

Describing the incident as a significant lapse in judgment, More accepted responsibility for providing a platform that allowed the remarks to gain wider attention and escalate into a larger controversy. He apologized to everyone who felt hurt or offended by the content and expressed regret over his actions.

More also confirmed that he is cooperating with authorities in connection with the ongoing investigation. He appealed to the public to give him an opportunity to improve, stating that the controversy had become a learning experience for him. He said he is working on himself and intends to make changes to his future content, which he hopes audiences will see in his upcoming work.

The controversy intensified after Maharashtra Cyber registered a First Information Report against Pranit More, Himanshu Jangra, Dr Sejal Pawar and others allegedly involved in the publication and dissemination of obscene and objectionable content from a stand-up comedy show held in Gurugram. The content was subsequently circulated online through various social media platforms.

According to Maharashtra Cyber, the case relates to videos and clips shared on platforms including YouTube and Instagram that allegedly contained offensive remarks concerning women, consent and deceased persons.

Authorities stated that one video clip allegedly featured comments by Dr Sejal Pawar regarding deceased male bodies and medical cadavers. Another clip allegedly contained remarks by Himanshu Jangra that portrayed women in a derogatory manner and trivialized issues related to consent and human dignity.

The First Information Report has been registered at the Nodal Cyber Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, along with Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000.

The controversy has also triggered a wider political and social debate regarding the boundaries of artistic expression and public decency. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde called for a ban on stand-up comedy shows and announced that she would write to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis regarding the matter.

Speaking on the issue, Tawde referred to the stand-up comedy event involving Pranit More and noted that Sejal Pawar, a student from KEM Hospital, had been present at the show. She said that, as Mayor, she opposed such performances, arguing that they were inconsistent with Indian cultural values. Tawde further stated that stand-up comedy shows should be prohibited and confirmed that she would formally communicate her concerns to the Chief Minister.

Responding to the growing debate, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized that stand-up comedy should not face blanket restrictions. He stated that the Constitution of India guarantees freedom of expression to all citizens but also establishes safeguards to prevent misuse of that freedom.

Fadnavis said that unrestricted expression can infringe upon the right of individuals in society to live with dignity. He stressed that freedom of expression must be exercised responsibly and within the constitutional framework designed to balance individual liberties with societal respect and dignity.

The controversy surrounding Pranit More has evolved beyond a dispute over a viral comedy performance, emerging as a significant public discussion on accountability in entertainment, the limits of artistic freedom, digital content regulation, and the responsibilities that accompany freedom of expression in contemporary society.
